Data Breaches

Hackers Steal 1.8 Million Records From Nikkei

The compromised information includes names, addresses, email addresses, phone numbers, and dates of birth.

Wired data leak

Japanese media giant Nikkei has disclosed a fresh data breach impacting more than 1.8 million records.

According to the company, best known for major financial publications, including The Nikkei and Financial Times, the incident involved a cloud service it uses for system development.

On the morning of October 7, the hackers used previously compromised credentials to access the cloud service, Nikkei says.

While a total of 1.83 million records were stolen, about 1.68 million included only information that cannot be used to identify an individual, the company says.

Of the remaining records, 150,000 contained names, addresses, email addresses, phone numbers, and dates of birth, and 120,000 contained email addresses.

No credit card information was compromised in the attack, Nikkei says.

The media giant says it revoked the compromised credentials immediately after identifying the data breach and will take additional security measures if necessary.

It has notified regulators and continues to investigate the scope of the incident and the nature of the compromised data.

According to Nikkei, as of October 16, it has found no evidence that the stolen personal information has been misused.

The company also notes that the incident did not result in disruptions or data tampering.

“We deeply apologize for any inconvenience and concern this may have caused to those involved. We will inform you individually if the leakage of personal information is confirmed,” Nikkei said.

The announcement comes less than a year after the company disclosed a data breach stemming from a Slack account hack.
